How to work it out

  1. Measure across the circular end — the diameter or radius.
  2. If you measured the diameter, halve it to get the radius r.
  3. Square the radius and multiply by π to get the base area.
  4. Multiply the base area by the height h: V = π r² h.
  5. Convert the result into your preferred unit above.

Worked example. Take a cylinder with a diameter of 20 cm (so a radius of 10 cm) and a height of 40 cm. The base area is π × 10² = 314.16 cm², and multiplying by the height gives a volume of about 12.57 litres (12,566 cm³ · 3.32 US gallons).

For anything that holds liquid, measure the inside of the cylinder — the wall takes up space that the contents cannot.

Questions people ask

What is the cylinder volume formula?
V = π r² h. Using diameter, it becomes V = π (d/2)² h, which is the same as V = π d² h ÷ 4.
What does each symbol mean?
V is volume, r is the radius of the circular base, h is the height (or length), and π is about 3.14159. The radius and height must be in the same unit before you multiply.
How is the formula derived?
The base of a cylinder is a circle with area π r². A cylinder is that circle extended straight up by its height, so you multiply the base area by h to fill the space.
What is the exact (π) form?
Leaving π in the answer gives the exact value — for example 144π in³ rather than 452.39 in³. Switch the precision control to 'Exact' to see it.
